Elena Favilli and Francesca Cavallo - creators of Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls

This picture was taken in Milan at the end of 2011. In those days, we were packing our belongings to fly to California and try to build a company. Elena had been working as a journalist, Francesca as a stage director and playwright. Working late nights and weekends, we had just built the first iPad magazine for children in the world: Timbuktu Magazine.

Now we have 12 mobile apps in the Apple App Store! We have published 6 paper books in English, French, and Italian, and we have built a toolkit that allows under-served communities to design and build playable spaces in collaboration with the NFL, Kaboom,, and the YMCA.

Our entrepreneurial journey taught us how important it is for girls to grow up surrounded by female role models. Heroines demonstrate how to be more confident and set bigger goals. We realized that 95% of the books and TV shows we grew up with lacked girls in prominent positions. With that in mind, we researched and discovered that much hadn't changed over the past 20 years, so we decided to do something about it by writing Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls.

Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls is a two-volume children's book series, each containing 100 bedtime stories about the lives of extraordinary women, past and present, and 100 full-color portrait-style illustrations by female artists from all over the world. The unique narrative style of Good Night Stories for Rebel Girls transforms each biography into a fairy-tale, filling the readers with wonder and a burning curiosity to know more about each heroine. In March 2018, we launched a podcast to expand on the adventures of the Rebel Girls we featured in the book series.

Our newest title, I Am a Rebel Girl: A Journal to Start Revolutions, encourages girls to train their rebel muscles. Our new journal prompts young readers with questions that encourage a depth of character such as: What do you think is worth fighting for? What business would you open? What would you invent? I Am a Rebel Girl is a feminist activity book that will help the next generation of Rebel Girls write their own stories. We can't wait to see how they change the world!
